Eastern Washington teams took home a state championship and had an overall strong showing at the WIAA State 3A & 4A Basketball Championships in Tacoma this weekend. The Gonzaga Prep Bullpups took the Girl’s 4A State title, defeating Mount Rainier Saturday night 53-51. Gonzaga Prep girls here
Other teams taking home trophies include the Richland boys, who dropped a 68-59 decision to Garfield in the 4A championship game. It was the first loss of the season for the Bombers, who finished 26-1.
Other teams placing included Sunnyside (4th) and University of Spokane (6th) in girls 3A, Gonzaga Prep (6th) in Boys 4A and Moses Lake (5th) in Girls 4A.
Teams that qualified for state but did not place included the Wenatchee Panthers, who qualified by having a strong late post-season run in district. It was the Panther boy’s first trip to state since 1986. Two Spokane teams failed to trophy in Boys 3A, University and Shadle Park.
